An open letter to people in early recovery from the Director and Founder of La Paz-Palm Beach.
La Paz-Palm Beach is not for everyone. We target a specific resident, who is fortunate to have the financial means to experience early recovery in a setting unlike most sober residences. La Paz-Palm Beach is an upscale sober residence in a resort setting. Our typical resident has recently completed Primary Care and is reticent of living in a stereotypical halfway house environment. We also welcome those that have tried to stay clean and sober, without an aftercare program and have recently experienced a relapse.
Early Sobriety does not have to be shameful or filled with anxiety about failures, past or present. It is not our mission to remove our residents from society, but to return them to it, with a strong set of new tools for maintaining their sobriety. We know from past experience that immediately after being discharged from Primary Care, there is an ever-present fear in everyone. The following self imposed doubts and fears may linger in early sobriety:
- My family is going to be watching every move I make. (People pleasing)
- Can I trust myself to do the next right thing? (self-confidence)
- Maybe I’m an addict, but I’m not convinced I am an alcoholic. (Denial)
- What happens if I relapse? (Trust in self)
- I’m not sure if I can do these meetings. (Social anxiety)
- Will I ever get back the things that I have lost? (Uncertainty)
- I’m worried about what others think of me (self-esteem)
- I’m not like other people, why is this happening to me? (Self-centered-victim)
- How am I going to take care of my affairs if I’m still in a Treatment Setting? (Worry)
- I’m sick and tired of being told what I can and cant do. (Anger)
- I know that if I don’t pick up a drink or drug that I can handle this on my own. (Self-delusion)
- I might try this, but if it doesn’t work the way it should, I can just leave (contempt prior to investigation)
All of the aforementioned thoughts will inevitably cause triggers to the alcoholic/addict and must be dealt with quickly if one wants to continue on the road to recovery. We can help you learn to let go of these dangerous obstacles at La Paz-Palm Beach.
These are but a few of many Fears that puzzle the recently sober person. The most important thing to understand is that it is almost impossible to find the answers if you try to do it alone. Recovering Alcoholics and Addicts are not weak-willed people. They are powerful people, capable of powerful accomplishments.
I have seen so many men and women totally change their lives, as a result of abstaining from mind-altering substances and subsequently learning new ways to see the world. I invite you to join a very select group of clients at La Paz-Palm Beach for a healing, nurturing journey. Recovery is fun and exciting, once you learn how to deal with fear.
I invite you to take the chance in changing your life at Reality Recovery.
